Ghosts of Anoka coming to Denmark Township
On Tuesday, October 19 ghost expert Maria King will reveal stories of the weird and unexplained happenings that gave Anoka the title "Halloween Capital of the World." The public is invited to “Ghosts of Anoka,” a free program at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church Guild Hall, 8435 St. Croix Trail (county road 21) in south Washington County. King’s power point presentation will cover unexplained phenomena such as a rocking chair that rocks when nobody is in it, a ghost who tucks children in at night, and a portrait that insists on a particular placement. The Denmark Township Historical Society is organizing the event.
Maria King knows her ghost stories. She uses story-telling, role-playing and quilting to make history relevant and entertaining. An educator for 30 years, King joined the Anoka County Historical Society in 2002 as volunteer coordinator. She organizes activities that blend history and folklore, such as walking tours of Anoka, visits to cemeteries featuring living history characters, Civil War Christmas events, tours of historic homes, and American Girl Teas. She works with volunteers to staff a farmhouse at the county fair, an exhibit gallery, city festivals and parades, a celebration of pies, and more.
The program is sure to delight and entertain the audience, which King says will leave feeling that "those who have gone before us may not be as gone as we like to think."
The Society welcomes new members. More information is available from President Peg Powers, 651.436.5087.
