SOCIETY PRESENTATION DESCRIBES
HISTORY OF PIONEER CHURCH |
| |
In 1863 pioneers of Denmark Township in South Washington County met in a new schoolhouse in Basswood Grove on St. Croix Trail to plan a new parish on that site. St. Mary’s Episcopal Church was built the next year and remains a vital part of the community.
|
| . |
| Denmark Township Historical Society member Wayne Boyd will describe the history of the church at a free slide presentation Tuesday, May 16, 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s, 8435 St. Croix Trail. The public is invited. |
| . |
| The Basswood Grove area served as a center for the township and once included a grocery store and a post office. The school closed in 1957 when students began attending Hastings schools and the building was moved to a farm across the road. |
