DENMARK TOWNSHIP PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

MINNESOTA REGIMENT IN CIVIL WAR

Wayne Boyd, board member of the Denmark Township Historical Society, will share his enthusiasm for Civil War history Tuesday, May 17 at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 8435 St. Croix Trail South in Denmark Township, south Washington County. His talk and slide presentation will focus on the First Minnesota Regiment at Gettysburg. The program is free and open to the public.

Boyd's interest in the Civil War started when he researched the experiences of two of his great uncles who fought in that war. In search of more understanding, he and his wife, Jean, and their sons, Eddie and Patrick, traveled to the battlefield at Gettysburg in 2003.

Boyd describes the First Minnesota Regiment as "a small group of men that turned the tide of the Civil War in the north. Their suicide march in Gettysburg resulted in 82 percent casualties on the second day of July, 1863 and showed the true colors of the regiment. Not one man wavered; not one man ran."
