| HISTORY OF AFTON ALPS |
| |
| The Denmark Township Historical Society invites the public to learn about the
history of Afton Alps at a free program Tuesday, March 20 at 7 p.m. at the Denmark Town Hall, 90th
and Oakgreen, in south Washington County. Amy Reents, daughter of founder Paul Augustine, will speak
and show photos of the early years. Longtime employee Glenn Brown will assist her. The public is
invited and there is no admission fee. |
| |
| Paul Augustine and his brother, Robert, opened the ski resort in 1963 on land
overlooking the St. Croix River. A friend, Tom Furlong, helped establish the resort then retired
from the business in 1991. The resort started with a Poma lift, a few rope tows and one chalet.
Today it includes 41 trails, 18 chair lifts, 5 chalets and 3 rental shops. In the summer it offers
golf and mountain biking. |
| |
| The Denmark Township Historical Society presents the program, now in its eighth
year of working to preserve traditions and stories about the township and making them available to
the public. For more information contact President Lyla Davies, 651-436-4493. |
