HASTINGS HISTORIAN DARSOW TO SPEAK AT DENMARK HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING

Richard Darsow, Hastings City Historian and columnist for the Hastings Star Gazette, will speak at a free public meeting sponsored by the Denmark Township Historical Society Tuesday, February 17, 7 p.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 8435 St. Croix Trail South. Everyone is invited to come and learn more about the historical relationship between Hastings in Dakota County and Denmark Township in Washington County as well as the importance of the Mississippi and St. Croix Rivers in the area's history.
Darsow is recognized as an outstanding authority on the history of Hastings. Since 1994 he has been Curator of the Pioneer Room, the nerve center of Hastings history, and was named City Historian in 1996. He is the author of The Hastings Archives and has written many articles on Hastings history. In 1998 Darsow received the first ever "Spirit of Hastings" award from the Hastings Chamber of Commerce. Along with his wife, Janie, he was co-recipient of the "Senior Celebrity of the Year" award from the Regina Memorial Outreach program.
The program is presented by the Denmark Township Historical Society, now in its fifth year of preserving the area's stories and traditions and making them available to people today. Members conduct oral interviews and organize programs and activities that carry out this mission.
The Society has produced its third historic calendar, filled with stories and pictures of the past and available for $8 at The Point restaurant on Highway 61 and at the Just Thinking...Books and Ice Cream Shop in Hastings. Calendars can be ordered by mail for an extra $2 by calling 651.436.6558.
More information about the Denmark Township Historical Society is available from President Walter Pechacek at 651.437.8383.
