HISTORIC CALENDAR CAPTURES IMAGES OF
DENMARK TOWNSHIP'S COLORFUL PAST |
| |
| Rare photos and lively stories abound in the 2005 historic calendar produced by
the Denmark Township Historical Society. The calendar stirs memories for longtime residents and shows
newcomers what rural life was like in the early years in the township, located in the southern tip of
Washington County. |
| Each month tells a story. "The Milk Man" describes how difficult it
was for haulers to pick up farmers' milk cans in the winter. "The Postman" depicts early
means of delivering mail, including horse and buggy. "Denmark Threshing" features photos
of harvest time. "Our Town Hall" pictures the hall built in 1881 that is still used for
town board meetings. "District 49" shows "Concord Hill," one of six former schools in the township. (Only one, Valley School, remains intact and on its original site on St. Croix Trail, near Highway 10. Denmark Township Historical Society is committed to saving and restoring this schoolhouse as an educational resource.) |
Former and current residents featured in the calendar include military hero Richard Behrends, a pilot on an aircraft carrier in World War II whose air group shot down a record 71 Japanese aircraft, and bluebird lover Oliver Charley. Pioneer families include the Hermans, the Shingledeckers, the Wrights and the Henrys. Early settler John Henry's son Ralph became a professor at Carleton College and wrote a memoir about growing up in the area called St. Croix Boyhood. |
| Calendars can be ordered by mail for $10 from Bill and Eileen Krueger, 651-436-6558. They can purchased for $8 at the Point Restaurant on Highways 10 and 61, and at the Just Thinking…Books and Ice Cream shop in Hastings at 1208 Vermillion Street. |
